A SEASON OF REST After going through an intense season of trials and testing it comes as a relief as I finally enter my season of rest. It came as a thought to me of, are people aware of when they are in their season of rest or do they only become aware of it after they've left it and when the new season of trials begins? Having gone through more than a year and a half of trials I am very much aware of my restful season. How I use that season, however, is up to me. Seasons of rest should never be wasted or taken for granted. If you know that you're in a season of rest (that's not to say that you don't have any problems at all) then make sure that you make the most of it. Trials tend to keep us tense and on more of an adrenalin rush than normal. When resting we must not suddenly neglect to spend time with God just because we don't need Him as much as before. We must use our restful periods to enjoy God's peace, spend time with Him and give ourselves a spiritual refreshing. We can't expect the world to come to a standstill just because we need it to (and as much as we want it to). This is where many people seem to get attacked with what is probably the number one threat to mankind - depression. People, not being given the opportunity to catch their breath in the crazy pace of life set by the world, succumb to despondency and misery. In comparison it's like being in the middle of a crowd about to run a marathon. As the race begins you are pushed and jostled by the crowds but manage to keep pace. After a while, still being caught in the thick of the crowd, you start to get a bit tired and stumble. You lose your balance and the overwhelming crowd end up trampling you under their feet, never giving you the space or opportunity to get up. You must either force your way back onto your feet or stay on the ground underfoot. Having been a victim of depression myself a few years ago, I understand the helplessness and hopelessness that accompanies it. There really is no book you can read, movie you can watch, song you can listen to or sermon you can hear that will help you to snap out of the misery that becomes your unwelcome companion that you can't do without. Medication can help you deal with your emotional pain, but it offers no cure. Depression is demonic and, as such, only the power of God can pull you out of it. If fact, only the power of God can help you to want to get out of it. I just want to encourage you today: your season of rest will come, and when it does, make the most of it. Use your restful season to saturate yourself with the peace of God that will give you enough faith and encouragement to last through the upcoming trial to your next season of rest. Live victorious, even if your life seems to belie that victory at the time. Sing God's praises; thank Him for the victory not yet manifest; read His Word and, above all else, make time to be with Him. Not just 5 minutes or 10 minutes, but some good uninterrupted time. Don't make excuses that you have no time as it is your own emotional and mental wellbeing which hangs in the balance. If you're in depression, or are teetering on the edge of it, run to the footstool of God, grab onto the hem of His garment and don't let go. No valley is without end and no trial is forever. God bless
